well, I didn't make it to the class last Thursday (so the previous figure remains unchanged) - but I did manage to get there two Tuesdays in succession. So, here's our new model - Anatoly, an amateur actor, loves to talk during sesions, recites his new role (a sparrow - quite a challenging part for a guy of his proportions) and ... well... here he is:
I used charcoal for the first time here, and it really
pisses me off evades me. I got the first sketch, then I accidentally touch it in several places - and the coal is plain gone! How do I make it grey if it just disappears at first touch? It's either pitch black, or it's non at all. I asked the teacher, and he said: "well, just don't press your fingers against the lines." And he showed, how after the first sketch you wipe it off (a portion of the drawing remains) - and then repeat it in greater detail and so on. I was quite impressed, but still I can't rationalize, how I actually proceed with the drawing. This is what I got after 6 hrs
of course, his left leg is too black - I still can't cope with the material. The book says, fix the lines you are happy with, but I don't like the idea. Next time, said the teacher, take an eraser and gently remove tone where the light is, follow the round shape - and may Force be with you.
