"Чехов умер накануне радикальной перемены в судьбе книги. Через год после его смерти начался небывалый в России праздник книги: вдруг неизвестно откуда пришли тысячи новых покупщиков, и - это странно даже звучит - у писателей, хоть и немногих, явились если и не состояния, то возможность обеспеченной жизни и свободы располагать своим временем.
 А Чехов до этого праздника не дожил. Литературное право находило еще некоторый сбыт в розницу, можно было продать издание той или другой книги, тысячу-другую экземпляров, но чтобы оно представляло определенную и постояную ценность, - это едва ли кому-нибудь приходило в голову.
 Ведь незадолго перед этим нуждался и умер в нужде Достоевский. А после него нуждались Гаршин и Надсон. У всех это вызывало сочувствие, но никто не удивлялся. Так полагалось. Книга, как бы она ни была талантлива, была тогда достоянием немногих."  (из воспоминаний И.П. Потапенко)
То есть получается, что в России читали всего несколько десятилетий (если считать, что в 1980-е эта привычка почти умерла).

Украина запаслась газом на год, заявляет Тимошенко

ЕВПАТОРИЯ (Украина), 12 янв - РИА Новости. Объемов газа, которые находятся в подземных газовых хранилищах (ПХГ) Украины, хватит, чтобы обеспечить потребности страны в течение года, заявила в понедельник в Евпатории премьер-министр Украины Юлия Тимошенко.

"Сейчас газ на Украину не поступает, но мы впервые закачали в хранилища такой объем газа - и этот газ принадлежит государственной структуре - что его хватит на год", - сказала Тимошенко.

I asked my baby, why everyone is reading her blog, and almost no-one reads mine. My baby girl is 5 months old. Today, after 30 minutes of unintelligible babbling, she suddenly stopped and quite distinctly said: O-ba-ma.
This appears to be the first word she said. Now, imagine McCain had won...

President Medvevev wants to extend presidential term to 6 yrs. It could be worrisome if we indeed had normal elections.

how we do this market thing

Oil prices dropped by half, but gasoline prices in Russia somehow remained as high as ever. People started asking questions. Now, the government, citing the US markets, ordered Russian oil companies to cut gas prices, or else... The companies grudgingly agreed. This is how market economy works in our country :)

I tried to sing a lullaby to my baby, but instead of falling asleep, she started singing along.

Chekhov was born here and Tsar Alexander I died here - they got monuments to both of them. I don't know Chekhov's reasons, but Alexander might die of sheer boredom. No, the place is nice, but what on Earth do people DO there?
